Confronting Capitalism: Real Solutions For A Troubled Economics System by Philip Kotler, PhD: A Book Review

Our current economic system is failing us. We have gone from a prosperous mercantile system based on manufacturing, production, and technology to a debt induced economy dependant on constant consumer consumption financed by rising personal debt. Where banks and other financial markets are deemed "to big to fail" and ordinary taxpayers, struggling to pay their bills amid declining real wages, are forced to pay for the mistakes and greed of others. Meanwhile, government polices continue to take a wrongheaded approach which benefits largely the one percent.

This recent aberration known as a "Corporate Capitalism" has lead us to a near collapse of the economy, the "Great Recession", a massive and unsustainable debt, increased poverty, a nearly decimated middle class, deepening unemployment with little new job growth, and a marked decline in the living standards for millions of individuals. Meanwhile, we're witnessing the largest income gap in American history continue to grow as the rich become even richer while the rest are left clinging by their fingernails to whatever they have left of the "American Dream". The question on everyone's mind is "What can we do about it?"

One of the best explanations comes from economist Dr. Philip Kotler, who has accurately described in everyday language what went wrong, who's to blame, and more importantly, what we can do about it in his latest book, "Confronting Capitalism". Dr. Kotler shines a brilliant light on the corrupting influences affecting our economy without all the usual partisan finger pointing, including a clear explanation of our economic strengths, where our weaknesses lay, and how both impact the global and domestic marketplace.

"Confronting Capitalism" is written for anyone interested in a common sense understanding of today's economic malaise; how we got here, where we're going, and how we can turn this around and return America to its economic preeminence while there is still time.

Barack his Rocker: What Makes Obama Tick?

Ok, let's make this clear from the get-go. I'm not a psychologist, but I do have a pretty good understanding of human nature, and something isn't quite right here. Why is it that every time there is a crisis, Obama finds a reason to avoid serious discussion and more often than not, a reason---preferably fundraising or playing golf---to get out of town until things settle down? Obama seems unwilling or simply unable to play in the big leagues, especially in situations he helped create.

While our technology has changed down through the millennia, Man himself really hasn't changed much. The same things which motivated us 10,000 years ago still motivates us now, just as the same types of things which inspired fear, confidence, hatred, compassion, love, selfishness and all our other emotions---voluntary and involuntary---are still with us; they've been hardwired into our collective psyche since we dropped out of the trees; or arrived as a slave race for aliens; or was pieced together out of Mesopotamian mud, depending on your personal beliefs. Each of us also has a "flight or fight" gene. We can even be tested for it (I was, and not unexpectedly, I tested positive for the "fight" variant, but then again, that could just be my overabundance of Irish and Scots ancestry too).

Nevertheless, could it be that Obama has the "flight" gene and an internal need to run away when confronted from a situation beyond his control? Could this have been reinforced by his acknowledged "troubled" childhood, or even his need to overcompensate? Numerous professional book reviewers of presidential and presidential hopefuls have cited numerous inconsistencies in his books, and more than a few troubling statements about feeling socially and/or racially inferior, even in terms of his early Moslem upbringing. His professional lack of experience, either in the business arena, the military, or even in politics has left him woefully unprepared for the type of serious and often immediate decision making a president is required to make; often with inadequate or incomplete information.

We know that many of the claims made Obama's supplicants , especially regarding his academic prowess, either simply never happened or somehow, he was omitted from some of the nation's most prestigious academic records and his classmates have come down with a serious case of amnesia (or were they blinded from his brilliance?). In fact, intellectually, the guy isn't really all that sharp despite an incredible and magnetic speaking ability...with a teleprompter. But speaking, with or without a teleprompter does not an effective president make.

In an era where just about everything a potential candidate ever did, from their birth (hell, conception) to their present moment in time is analyzed and reanalyzed ad nauseam. We hear from their kindergarten teacher, earliest playmates, babysitters, coaches, friends, neighbors, tailors, until we'd rather switch channels and watch infomercials instead. We learn in minute detail about their family, their eccentric aunts and uncles, cousins, family heritage, and so forth. And yet, we know next to nothing about Obama's, and what we think we know is often full of contradiction or are simply a blank. How's that possible? Those things we do have a reasonable certainty about are, frankly, troubling, especially his participation in clearly Marxist or communist organizations, associations with black racists, or with 60's era terrorists. His own comments regarding race, particularly about whites, are especially disconcerting. It makes me think of someone who has a fragile inner sense of security---not the same as self-confidence mind you---and with it, a internalized hatred of all things which "hurt" him as a child; which causes him to feel inadequate and propelles a need to appear superior; a persecution mentality now given an opportunity for revenge. I read once where Bill Clinton had a sense of insecurity stemming with his birth and an abusive relationship with his father and the need to protect not just himself, but his mother as well. This supposedly lead to both a drive to excel and a constant need for validation, be it the cheers of the crowds or his extra martial affairs.

All of this brings me back to Barack Obama the Man. Why does he seemingly make these inflated public statements following a crisis event which often sound phony or makes promises/threats which nobody, especially the intended party, takes seriously? As President, there is much Obama can do about the illegal immigration situation for instance, and yet despite constant threats to use executive orders (his "magic pen" as he's called it), nothing happens. He knows (as does Congress) that the American People want---demand---that the southern border with Mexico be secured, militarized if necessary (in all fairness, George W Bush was keenly aware of this too and failed to act), yet not only does he not act, he's repeatedly done just about everything in his power to make the situation worse. Now, faced with a major crisis, he further refuses to take action. When he went to Texas recently, it wasn't to access the border situation, it was for another fundraiser. It's like a child who refuses to look at the mess they made as if by not acknowledging it, the mess doesn't exist. When the assault on Benghazi was underway, Obama was at fundraiser. When the US military command was a go in dispatching mass murderer Osama Ben Laden, Obama was found on the golf course. During the operation itself, some individuals in the situation room said that Obama was beside himself; second guessing himself. In dealing with situations in the Middle East, especially those involving the terrorists groups, he has continually shown himself as weak and that's usually a fatal mistake.

More recently, the military situation in Gaza and the downing of the MH17 has shown Obama again out of his depth. His statements are characterized as worthless; unbelievable. Our allies, especially Israel, have good reason not to feel confident in the Obama Administration, although I think they can completely count on the American People having their back. Meanwhile, our adversaries, or former adversaries, can barely contain their contempt for the man. I dare say that even many of our allies feel the same way. American economic and military power, along with our political prestige continues to flounder, not necessarily because we are weak economically (though we are much to debt heavy and we have all but lost our middle class while becoming officially an oligarchy whereby the government represents primarily the top 1%), and we still the best trained, equipped, and dedicated military in the world, it's because the government and its leaders (notice I didn't say "our" leaders) like the President, his Administration, and Congress are perceived globally as inept and ineffectual. As in advertising, image in politics, especially global power politics, is everything.

Obama retreats to fundraisers, golf courses, lengthy vacations, or ineffectual press conferences because they're safe. He understands them. He feels safe. He believes he can control the situation; perhaps things will sort themselves out or someone will devise a way out for him. Regardless, the distance from the "real world" and the one of illusion which he has created for himself throughout his life, is intact. The ultimate problem is that the world is spinning out of control at an unparallel rate. The world needs America despite their occasional claims to the contrary. We are not the world's policeman, but we are its best, and perhaps ultimate hope for continued survival like it or not. In the absence of our leadership, those who desire to enslave of the human mind and soul see only encouragement to crush Humanity's Will. Our adversaries will press forward with the own agendas while the shadow of tyranny will continue to stretch over and quickly darken the light of freedom which we represent. Barack Obama has serious flaws, but I'm not explicitly speaking of the man---we all have our own failings and I would be the last to cast the first stone---and historically, America has made some terrible mistakes in judgment. We're not perfect, but we try. America needs a dedicated and serious leader it can count on, and the world needs to know that we have its back. Against evil, failure is not an option.

Invasion America?

What does an invasion look like? Is it the howl of massive air assaults and shelling; the primetime "shock and awe" of a Baghdad? Does it arrive with a naval landing like D-Day on the beaches of Normandy or Leyte Gulf in Philippines, rolling in on red waves and floating bodies? Perhaps it's more subtle; it ebbs and flows like an oily ooze, sticking here and there and gradually covering everything. During the early years of the Cold War, both Russia and China discussed and then ruled out any possibility of a invasion on the US mainland. They knew that in an all out attack, their invading forces had more to fear from the average American Citizen as they did from US combat troops. Yet, why can't we shake this feeling that somehow something is wrong? Somehow, we've been duped and we're under assault as a nation? Just what would an invasion actually look and feel like?

We've all seen and heard the news. Some 60,000 children, some as young as 9 months, have been effectively abandoned by their parents in Latin America, and have sent thousands of miles to our doorstep along our Southern border. Many US Government officials are expecting well over 100,000 of these children before any semblance of order is established. Meanwhile, we already have some 12 million "invaders"---illegal aliens--- now living here; some of them supported by churches, religious organizations, and other institutions which believe they are above our immigration laws. But they aren't the only ones. There are also those who hide them; find them permanent or semi permanent shelter and jobs. There are those who coach them on how to use our taxpayer based public assistance programs to obtain money, housing, medical care, and education for which they aren't entitled. And then there are the employers who don't just break the laws governing the hiring of illegals, but work them in sweatshop conditions, with little pay, that are simply brutal with little to fear from the workers.

How different is this from those who provided support to our enemies during war? Yes, I realize these are differing circumstances, but in some respects they are similar. Both seek to weaken or overwhelm our social structures. Both seek to impose hardships on their fellow citizens. America's social structures, designed for the welfare of it citizens, is on the verge of failure. We have military veterans and those who are mentally ill, who are homeless, hungry, and in need of medical treatment that will do without because tax dollars are being diverted to those here illegally. We have minorities and others in the same boat. Is this fair to them? Limited funds for improving the quality of public education, which is continuing to plummet in comparison with other nations, is now going to providing translators and remedial teachers. What about funds for school lunches, afterschool and summer programs? Is this fair to our kids? Now, we are faced with an addition of 60,000 or maybe 100,000 kids coming to this country because of lies spread not just by smugglers, who charge upwards of US $7000 per child, but in many cases, lies told to them by their own governments that their children will automatically become American Citizens or that they will be given some sort of amnesty? They won't. They will be returned to their respective governments who will be responsible for either getting them back to their parents or placing them. Such folly.

And this hasn't been without its bloodshed. Dozens of state and federal border patrol, ICE agents have been shot at. Several wounded. Some killed. Since 2008, there has been 300 incursions by Mexican soldiers and military helicopters incursions along our southern borders. In many cases, with shots fired. There has been several instances of harassments of US farmers living along the border. The Mexican authorities always claim there was a "mistake" of some sort; that they were chasing drug smugglers, and yet many of the incursions have happened in broad daylight (and who can overlook the irony that many in Mexico's government and military are in the pay of the drug cartels? And let's not forget that we've already ceded an Arizona county to these very same drug smugglers). More recently, the Mexican troops were seen escorting many of the abandoned children several miles into US territory before returning to Mexico. Would this constitute an invasion in your mind?

And what invasion would be complete without a fifth column? Those secretly or sometimes not so secretly, working to "aid and abed" the invading force? We certainly made us of the French and Dutch underground leading up to and during our invasion of France during WWII. Well, we seem to have them too, expect ours are to be found mainly in Washington.

Washington seems, well, awash in moronic and imbecilic acts of inaction. In short, they bicker and make useless promises. What little that actually does get done doesn't benefit the American People. We all know by now (or should know), that we are no longer a democratic republic. We are an Oligarchy; which means, to paraphrase Lincoln, "a government of the few, by the few, and for the few". The few mega rich that is. Of late, and more to the point, Obama, his Attorney General Eric Holder have done everything in their power to undermine our border agents, ICE, enforcement of our immigration laws, including a limited amnesty of the children of illegal immigrants, non-enforcement of deportation preceding, slashing budgets, restricting border and ICE operations, failing to secure the border as repeatedly promised, Operation "Fast and Furious" which equipped drug dealers with top line fire power, opening up various social programs to illegals at taxpayer expense, suing states which enforce existing federal laws, and so on and so on. Meanwhile, others, like McCain, Graham, Boehner, Paul, Pelosi and others on both sides of the aisle are busy as little as dung beetles pushing for amnesty in every form imaginable, including a "military service for citizenship" deal, which of course, involves learning English and basic US history and its laws. City mayors and even a few state governors and their legislators have even called for "sanctuary" status, whatever that's supposed to mean.

These acts are nothing short of treason in the classic sense of the word. These individuals elected to represent us, have turned their backs on not just their oaths, but our laws, our traditions, and on the American People. We are a nation of immigrants, that's true. What we ask is of these individuals is follow the law and do it the right way. Don't jump the line. Don't let your first act be that of a criminal. Their home countries don't tolerate it, why should we? Not only is it for their own good, it's for ours as well. It gives us time to absorb the influx; to expand our social safety net so that all taxpayers can benefit. That's not racist or hateful. It's common sense, and it's compassionate for all those coming here legally for a better life.

The High Price of Minimum Wage

There's a lot of hubbub about minimum wage lately. Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) recently said he wasn't budging on his stand for an increase in minimum wage to $10.10 and blamed Republicans for killing the bill Obama has championed. Well, he was right. The vote failed along party lines by 54-42. Reid claims that $10.10 is the absolute minimum needed to get out of poverty. Anything less won't cut it. The current minimum wage is $7.25. This is the same Harry Reid who said, following the episode involving the BLM and Cliven Bundy standoff, that those opposing the US government should be considered "domestic terrorists".

According to the Congressional Budget Office, the wage increase would increase wages for 16.5 million workers. However, while it would theoretically remove some 900,000 out of poverty, the increase is also cost some 1 million workers their job due to layoff and closures. This also doesn't count the number of workers whose hours would be reduced or their increased work load to absorb the reduction of employees. Nor does it include the number of potential lost jobs which would otherwise be available. Lastly, the increase in the minimum overlooks a fundamental feature of simple economics. The increase in wages would not only reduce job or hour availability (not to mention cut backs in benefits which are calculated as part of the compensation package), but would raise real prices. After all, you didn't think employers were simply going to absorb the costs and take a hit on their bottom line did you?

Simply put, the wage increase from $7.25 to $10.10 or whatever it winds up to be will simply be passed on down the line, be it the producer, wholesaler, retailer, or customer in the form of higher prices. This in turn will require their prices to increase to absorb not just the new price but also their own wage increase, and here's something else it does. The increase in minimum wage raises prices, minimally to be sure but accumulatively as well, and reduces the demand for jobs in the long term as employers adjust and cutback on hiring. The result is few jobs available, therefore the demand for those existing jobs will increase as people. The result will be people willing to settle for less; that is, less benefits, more hours, etc. It also reduces the likelihood that employees will do anything to risk losing those scarce jobs, thus on the positive, turnover should decrease but on the negative employee will be less likely to "rock the boat", join or form unions, etc. It should also increase productivity through increased efficiency in human capital and technology. Not to worry though, less employment opportunities (and the higher cost of education) increase the ranks of military who can always use more "cannon fodder" for the next country we intend to make safe for Capitalism and the one percenters.

In short, employers will have a more docile and manageable workforce willing to work longer hours, carry more responsibilities, and accept fewer benefits, which in the long run will improve their bottom line while the military will have a steady flow of the excess. Those on fixed incomes will negatively feel the effect two fold. First, their incomes don't increase to offset the corresponding increase in prices. Secondly, the increase in minimum wage increases younger individuals to seek the available jobs that older employees were previously willing to fill and less likely to insist on or use benefits.

The Crimea: A Lesson in Realpolitiks

A few weeks ago, I congratulated the Ukrainian People on their successful revolution (http://anotheropinionblog.com/2014/02/uaw-appeals-workers-decision-not-to.html). Just a few days after posting my blog, a series of events began to unfold. First, hundreds of heavily armed and well trained men were ferried by unmarked helicopters in the pre-dawn hours and immediately secured key government buildings, roads, and airports throughout the Crimea, a state within the Ukraine. Like the unidentified helicopters, the men had no unit or national identification. They moved with speed and exact precision; saying little about their intentions. Shortly afterwards, more troops began to be airlifted in along with unmarked truck convoys. But there was one key identifying marker, like the mysterious trucks, the weapons, and even the helicopters themselves, they were all of Russian manufacture. What few words the troops did speak weren't Ukrainian. It was Russian.

Given my own personal military expertise, I think there's little doubt that these impressively efficient soldiers were none other than Russia's vaulted "Spetsnaz" or Special Purpose Forces; quite possibly the 45th Guards which is an airborne delivery unit trained in these kind of procedures. They are very similar to the US Navy SEALS or the British SAS (Special Air Services). They are quite literally among the best of the best; individuals that you'd want on your side in a fight. The fact they were able to seize the entire state of Crimea during the final phases of a revolution without firing a shot should tell you a great deal about these guys. Since then, more and a more troops and equipment have poured into the Crimea; fully securing the state on behalf of Russia. Since the invasion or "stabilizing" of the Crimea as the Russian press is calling it, there's been dramatic increase in global tension, especially between Europe, Russia, and the US. But before we get into the that, let me give you a brief history of the Crimea to put things in context.

The Crimea is a peninsula which juts into the Black Sea, leading to the Mediterranean and Aegean seas through the Dardanelles Strait, separating Europe from Asia. Historically, it has been at the crossroads of countless armies, from the Scythians, Persians to Greeks, Romans, the Byzantine Empire and finally, the Huns, becoming a Khanate in 1443. Russia, from the time of Peter the Great, wanted to "Westernize", which meant trade and that meant a navy. However, Russia didn't have any warm water ports to speak of, but that changed in 1773 when the Crimea was conquered by the armies of Czarina Katherine the Great, where it remained in 1917 (during those years, the infamous Crimean War took place between 1853 and 1856, involving the empires of the Ottomans, France and Britain on one side and the Russian Empire on the other). From 1917 to 1921, the Crimea was more or less independent, however it came again under the control of the new Soviet Russia, where it remained until 1991. Since then, it has been part of the Ukraine.

In ethnic makeup, the Crimean population, which is just under 2 million, is 58% Russian and 24% Ukrainian, with the remainder being mostly Tartars. In terms of religion, most are Russian Eastern Orthodox. While it's economy is primarily agricultural and tourism, there are substantial offshore natural gas fields. In addition, Russia maintains several large military bases in the Crimea, especially its vast naval facility in Sevastopol, home to the Black Sea Fleet which encompasses surface ships and submarines as well as repair facilities and several naval air wings (think Norfolk Virginia or Portsmouth UK). So, hopefully that put events more in focus.

Europe has been actively trying to attract the Ukraine into the Western orbit since 1991, which it appears to have now successfully done. However, the majority Russians in the Crimea have long voiced their opposition and protested (largely unreported in the West) to remain in the Russian Obit. With the removal of the pro-Russian government of Viktor Yanukovych as few weeks ago, Putin made his decision, which he stated was to "protect" the ethnic Russians (and obviously the gas fields and military bases) and introduced troops. President Obama recently sent a US destroyer to "monitor and assess" the situation and dispatched several military surveillance planes to take a look at Russian military movements; more intimidation and public show than anything else since satellites can more easily do the job. Meanwhile, the Crimean Parlaiment has promised to put the entire matter to a public vote---stay with Russia or stay with the Ukraine; independent monitors are expected to be welcome.

While Obama and other Western leaders have spoken to the Russian President regarding situation, Putin has insisted there will be no military engagement unless provoked. Thus far, he has held to that, but for how much longer? The great 19th century German statesman, Otto von Bismarck, introduced a new word to the world, "realpolitik", in engineering Prussia's rise to continental power. At its essence, it means accepting situations, especially political, as they are, not as we'd like them to be. America has historically had a difficult time grasping the weight of its meaning. President Obama can make all the "demands" he wants. The reality is that there are Russian troops on the ground and in force not to mention a sizable naval, air, and logistics resources at its disposal, not to mention both its historical and demographic claims. Secondly, the American People want no part to a conflict of this nature with the Russians.

Lastly, largely thanks to policy failures by Bush II and Obama, America no longer claims the respect it once did among the world community. Obama has little respect to no credibility at home. America's economy continues to sputter; its military exhausted and facing historical reductions back to pre-WWII levels. As the joke goes, Obama is playing checkers while Putin is playing chess. Perhaps. But regardless, I think the name of the game is "Realpolitiks" and Obama is being outmatched.

A Snapshot of America: Not A Pretty Picture

12.9%. That's the average approval rating for the United States Congress. That means 87.1% of Americans think that Congress is continuing to do an unacceptable job---a pox on both houses by the voting public apparently. Actually, that rating, which comes from Real Clear Politics, is the average of several polls, ranging from a high of 14% to a low of 10%. Gallup, for instance, gives an approval rating of 13% according to their most recent poll from January 2014. So, who do you want to blame---the Democrats or Republicans?

Well, according to PollingReport.com, through the middle of February 2014, Democrats had an approval rating of 33% with a disapproval rating of 60%. Not exactly stellar. Not to be outdone, the Grand Ole Party had an approval rating of just 22% for the same period and a disapproval rating of 72%. Nothing like an old fashion race to the bottom is there? Meanwhile, President Obama has disapproval rating of a whopping 56% for the end of February. So much for his "year of action" so far. PollingReport.com also reported that as of the end of February, 63% of Americans thought that the country was headed in the wrong direction while only 32% thought we were headed down the right road (no doubt many of those are in the hand basket business). Interestingly, that majority has been fairly consistent since at least 2012 according to the polling results. So, what's going on here?

The answer is actually quite simple. These numbers merely reflect the huge and deep disconnect between Washington and the American People---the so-called "flyover country" as the Beltway elite like to call us. There's really nothing new here. While we may not have known the numbers, each of us knew it from the increasing price of groceries to conversations while standing in line or at company water cooler. America is divided; deeply so. The question of course should turn to the obvious--what can we do about it, if anything? To answer that, I think we should look at some of the pressing issues such as illegal immigration, Obamacare, the economy, and the divide between the "haves and have nots".

Illegal immigration has been a hot topic since at least George Bush II, although President Ronald Reagan granted the estimated three illegal immigrants then living in this country a "one time only" amnesty in 1986. The result, as predicted, was a tidal wave of new illegal immigrants in the hopes that they too would be granted a "one time only" amnesty. The truth is, they've come very close to it, having been granted instate tuition by some universities (whereas ordinary students are denied), not to mention access to billions of dollars worth of taxpayer based services such as education, housing, medical care, and so forth. Meanwhile, various religious organizations have quite openly ignored federal laws and not only protected illegal immigrants by providing so-called "sanctuary", but actively assisted in finding housing, enrolling in schools, assisting in sidestepping state and federal laws, and finding jobs (which is illegal for a perspective employer). Meanwhile, Obama and his Attorney General, Eric Holder, have bypassed or ignored existing immigration laws. What do the American Public think?

To those in Washington, it really doesn't matter, but for the record, a plurality favors stronger border security and no taxpayer assistance for those here illegally. But, after almost two decades of opposing illegal immigration being ignored by Washington, it appears most Americans have thrown in the towel. According to a recent Christian Science Monitor article, three-fourths of those polled favored allowing illegal immigrants to remain---provided that could meet minimum citizenship requirements, with the majority supporting some form of amnesty being Democrat. As an aside, in another poll, 87% of Americans still favored making English the official national language.

Regarding the economy, according to a CNN/ORC poll from the end of December, 68% thought the economy remained poor with not much hope for the near term. Half of those polled were cutting back on clothes and appliances while 36% were cutting back on food and medicine. Interestingly, according to a poll conducted by Fox in February, a full 58% think the economy is going to get worse yet. Judging by the prices in grocery store, they may well be right. Speaking of medicine, Gallup released a poll for mid-February which indicated that 51% of you did not like Obamacare. But not fret, that's slightly better than the 54% non-approval rating it has been polling, but then again, two-thirds of those polled said that if they knew then what they know now about Obamacare, it never would have passed. That's the thing about actually reading those pesky bills! Can anyone out there say "trust me"?

There's no questioning that in terms of income, there's never been a greater gap between the rich and poor. The middle class as such doesn't really seem to exist anymore. We seem to have the poor, working poor, the slightly better off (what's left of the old middle class), the near rich and rich, and the insanely uber-rich. Ideally, we should look something like an oval or egg on its side with a large middle class, a small poor at the bottom and a small rich at the top. Instead, we look like a figure eight. What then are we to do?

According to a February 4th poll by CNN, some 66% want the government to reduce the income gap (and we all know what a great job the government has done with the economy and healthcare). Of course, most Republicans disapprove of the idea while a majority of Democrats and Independents are in favor. Oddly, those earning more than $100k also agreed that the government should "do something" to reduce the income gap. There's no question that the continuing wage gap, which has thrown more and more Americans in poverty, increasing the likelihood of social unrest, especially coupled with Washington's arrogance toward Mainstreet America and ever closer ties with Wallstreet. Perhaps that's part of the reason for Washington's increased surveillance of its citizens and stockpiling of ammo. Ever wonder if they know something we don't?

While this article simply can't begin to cover all the issues mentioned in further depth, let along other, equally important topics such as the aforementioned "bugging" of America, home values, declining standard of life, crime, infrastructure decline, rising debt (especially for students), educational "dumb down", race relations, attempts to reign in the 2nd Amendment, the declining power of unions and employee associations, and so much more, it is apparent that we, as Americans, are in trouble. Perhaps more than at any other time in our history, though not necessarily as obviously. Gallup reported recently that 81% of Americans either rarely or never trusted the government. Think about that for just a moment. This is a government which is supposed to represent you and I and yet 81% of us can't trust it. You don't have to a rocket scientist...or political scientist to see where that leads. So, I ask you---what are you prepared to do about it...and then what are you prepared to do?

What's Going On America?

You may never have heard of Jamie Dimon or his ilk, but there's no doubt you've felt his influence. Dimon is the CEO of one of the largest financial institutions in the world, JPMorgan. His was one of the institutions which trigger the great financial meltdown a few years back, resulting in the largest bailout in US history and the now infamous phrase, "to big to fail". Mr. Dimon's company remains very much in business and none of executives or shareholders ever faced a day in jail though JPMorgan was forced to pay the largest civil penalty in US history. In fact, he just received a 74% increase in salary--mainly in the form of stocks and stock options---from $11 million to $20 million dollars.

Not too shabby, especially if you consider that real wages for the average working class family has continued to drop year upon year and, after being adjusted for inflation, is no better off than they were in the mid 1970's. In fact, since 1997, all economic gain has gone to those in the top 10% income bracket. Meanwhile, while companies like JPMorgan were bailed out on the taxpayer's dollar (against the will of the American People I should add), some 10 million individuals have lost their homes since 2008 due to the home mortgage meltdown. And, yes, while many should have known better than to borrow more than they needed or could afford , despite intense pressure for banks, so too should the bankers and mortgage companies have known better. Apparently Middle America wasn't deemed "too big to fail" by the Washington-Wall Street nexus.

As everyone should know by now, the top 1% control some 40% of the nation's wealth while the bottom 80% controls a scant 7%. Only 19% of that wealth is actually in the form of income. Most of it is in the form of stocks, bonds, and real estate. To put it another way, the richest 400 people in this country control more wealth the bottom 150 million people. That's a hellva of disparity. The largest ever in our history. So, what are we to do about, if anything?

There's been a lot clamor about raising the minimum wage from its current $7.25 to $11.00 or even $15.00 dollars an hour. Of course all that will do is raise the costs of products, increase the number of layoffs or reduce hours while increasing workloads, not to mention the likelihood of a reduction or elimination of benefits. Heck, some employers may just shut their doors. President Obama is expected to increase the minimum wage for federal contracts to $10.10 an hour, which is nice except the contract bids will simply be adjusted to accommodate the change and thus the taxpayers---that's you and I---will be forced to pay for the wage increase. Sounds like swimming in mud to me.

Typically those who hold minimum wage jobs are the poorly educated (as to whose fault that is, is the subject for another time). Anyway, the only option typically is to return to school. However, to do that means incurring a back breaking debt, despite grants and low interest loans. Since 1999, student debt has increased a mind numbing 500% while those graduating were faced with an average decrease in starting salary of 10%. And filing bankruptcy may help with some of their debt load, it won't erase their student debt, but it will leave an nasty mark on the credit rating, which is the last thing they need.

Unions can't help them much either. Membership continues to drop. Today, it makes up only 7% of the work force thanks to job exportation, NAFTA (thanks heaps Bill), and changes in technology. The only segment of the workforce where unions at least continue to hold their own is the government sector, though wages increases, benefits, and pension protection are but dead. If amnesty is given to the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants now living in this country (not including the anticipated 7--10 million that will follow in the next wave), we'll see wage and benefits decline even further as demand for jobs far outstrips supply. Blacks and Asians will be most adversely affected in the influx since they currently hold most of the jobs that will be undercut from them and taxpayer based services are redirected away to pay for translators, housing, re-education and training programs and other social services. Meanwhile, the strain of Obamacare all but break the back of America's healthcare capabilities. Minimum care will become the norm with only critical care being available for those deemed "productive" as doctors and other healthcare providers hang up their white coats and college bound students consider other professions. All this calls to mind Ronald Reagan's famous quip about the nine scariest words, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help". So, what do we do then?

Serious discussion about extensive government reform, and even revolution are almost commonplace, even anticipated, although the media attempts to make it sound like "crazy talk" from the lunatic fringe. But the facts are that less than 20% of population say they have any faith in the government while just over 50% say that US democracy needs a total overhaul, even if that mean open rebellion (of those, only a few believe that reform will suffice). The majority of Millennials (those under 30) support socialism, primarily because they see capitalism as it now exists as having failed. Perhaps that's why federal agencies have been on a massive spending spree acquiring military grade firepower and ammo; police departments have become more "militarized", senior military officers are quizzed about their willingness to fire on US civilians (those refusing have been largely relieved of command); increased drone and cyber-surveillance; ongoing government harassment; and a proliferation in what I term "diversionary television" designed to take the public's mind of our national and economic decline as well as get us accustomed to the idea of being watched with the variety of "reality" TV programs.

"Diversionary television" is of course, but one part of the media outlets controlled by the top 1%. While media coverage seems to be focused on gay rights, abortion, or domestic spying, not to mention such earth shaking events involving the likes of Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus or the Kardashians, only 3% of those surveyed in a poll conducted by AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research in December 2013 thought those were important issues. The overwhelming majority of Americans it seems were interested in under-reported topics such as healthcare, jobs, the economy, and illegal immigration. Bread and butter issues seems to be the only "View" the majority of Americans are interested in. It may be why we don't hear very much about what's happening in places like the Ukraine. Certainly the goal is to keep America's attention diverted from the real issues, but also Americans divided along as many lines as possible to prevent a united front from focusing on them (this also explains the usual empty talking heads on TV and radio). Meanwhile, politicians are gearing up for their next cycle of hype and misdirection intended to play on the public's emotions. But, I wonder, for how much longer?

The Corporate Shell Game: The Future Before Us

There's no question I'm an individualist. I fully support the "rights" of the individual over the corporate, but the modern corporation in our post-nation world doesn't see it that way. Nope. Not at all. In today's world where corporations have replaced national governments, the concept of individuality, like privacy, has become, shall we say "passé".

In the pursuit of maximizing profit and increasing shareholder return, corporations view the world in terms of marketplace. In their world, there is no Germany, India, Mexico, or United States. Designs are created through multinational teams electronically linked through satellite or Ethernet. Products are then modeled and finally produced in a host of regions in varying degrees; material gleaned from one country, sorted and roughed out in another using labor from yet another country, and then shipped using a ship or plane or truck registered to still another, to an assembly point in yet another location, and again, in all likelihood using workers who are perhaps from somewhere other than the host company. The concept of an a "American" car or Japanese electronics are the thing of pure advertising gimmicks or quaint nationalistic myth. Don't believe me? Look up the parts on your car. Look at the tags on your wardrobe. Check out where the parts of your washer and dryer are made. Go ahead. I'll wait. The rest of this article will be here when you get back.

You see, what matters here is the unfettered access to and use of resources, be those resources natural, manufactured, or human. Yes, I said human. In this evolving era of the neo-feudalist State, employees--folks like you and I---are merely resources; something to be used to accomplish a specific goal and then discarded, either because the costs of retaining us exceeds the benefit of retaining us or our function has become obsolete like an eight track player (if you don't know what that is, ask your parents). Wars aren't fought for national pride or even "freedom"--ours or anyone else's. They're fought to secure economic resources and markets by governments on behalf of corporate interests.

In order to pursue this Post-State open market strategy, it's necessary that the governments maintain to a stable economic platform. Simply put, keep the masses in line. In order to generate profits, companies must be able to plan and that means they must be able to anticipate, predict, and manipulate trends. You can't do that when the herds of humanity aren't manageable. Therefore, governments must ensure there is a measure of functional stability through rule of law. So, how do you do that? Actually, it's relatively simple.
Remember, no matter how complex the marketplace is, it all can be reduced to its most common denominator: supply and demand. In this case, we're not talking about widgets. We're talking about jobs. By restricting the number of jobs available, the demand increases. The fewer the jobs available, the more applicants there will be to work at a lesser rate (which includes things like pensions, work hours, vacation time, and healthcare benefits, and so forth). At the same time, these transnational corporations encourage governments to pursue non or low growth policies and use diversionary policies such as blaming one group or political party or the other for the nation's woes. It keeps the focus off of the real reasons.

Secondly, governments have to have funds to function. With a decrease in the availability of jobs, there is a corresponding decrease on available taxes. Therefore, taxes increased in the name of "progress" or some humanitarian sounding program. Governments also control the availability of money through interest rates and amount of currency in the economy. Companies, to be sure, pay taxes too, but only insomuch as it benefits them. You can best bet they get their money's worth, but back to the point. Our taxes pay for services to ensure the smooth function of commerce; that is maintaining a level of security, education, adequate housing, education, clean water and air, etc. In other countries, priorities may differ. Again, it depends the number of " two legged resources" and the availability of jobs. That's why poorer countries may not focus so much on, let's say clean water, job safety, or housing. Of course, culture plays a part in this too. These same locales may not have the benefit of a historically benevolent social-political structure (case in point are many Latin American and East Asian countries).

Another way to maintain control is through electronic surveillance. By actively monitoring the populace, governments can keep check on the mood of the masses and anticipate possible disturbances that could affect commerce. They also can watch for and keep tabs on potential "troublemakers" so in the event something happens, they know just where to look and who to watch out for. Companies already do this internally by being on the lookout for so-called troublemakers or those individuals willing to speak up and speak out (often those individuals are harassed into quitting or "downsized"). Companies with unions often use unions to keep the rank and file in check (ie: defuse worker discontent, discourage walkouts and/or strikes or strong arm members into approving less than acceptable contracts). At the same time, the current mobility of companies also eliminates the impact of the union by being able to close the business and relocate elsewhere.

This too encourages a individualistic go-it-alone mentality born out of frustration. With many of the blatant abuses of employees having been eliminated over five decades ago, this has all contributed to the decline of organized labor (not to mention Labor's history of corruption and being in the hip pocket of the Democrats). Meanwhile, economic policy is set at WTO, G8 and other conferences with instructions or "advisory consultations" from these same transnational corporations, while we're keep preoccupied with the latest fashion trends, games, car models, latest manufactured crisis, and easy-on-the-spot credit. Bread and circuses the Roman's called it. It meant keeping the masses just contented enough not to notice what was happening. So, is possible to fight back?
The answer is yes, but a qualified yes. First, one has to think in this same terms as the corporations and their governmental hirelings. The idea of borders is obsolete. Governments simply manage a given area. That's why corporate associations support amnesty---more workers = lower wages. Political ideology is just as obsolete since corporations can operate with the same degree of freedom in China as in Canada or France. How a particular government manages its populace is of no concern.

However, democracy is considered an impediment since in a actual democracy, there is an accountability factor between the people and government, and by implication, corporations and their "social and economic responsibility". People have to think, act, and cooperate globally. There has to be a unison of action. A particular action in, say, Portugal, has to draw a similar response elsewhere. This requires a level of communication which doesn't quite exist yet, but the tools are there (which may be one reason governments are eavesdropping more and trying to regulate and tax the internet). As an aside, and perhaps most importantly, one has to accept that political parties are virtually irreverent. Odds are they are owned. Part of the pacification of the workers is to keep them confused and divided. This can be through the shell game of blaming the nation's ills on the opposing party, or pitting one economic class, race, or religion, against the other as well. You'll hear various politicians come out with promises or claims to be "with the people". Right. Check out who gives them money; what committees they're on, and how long they've been in office (the longer the more likely they've been bought and paid for).

Elections, especially at the state/provincials or national levels, are more about the illusion of choice than they are about real change. Few issues involving big money or contracts haven't already been settled behind closed doors long before the public or media ever hears about it. Demand specific actions from them. Demand "sunshine laws" to eliminate closed door hearings from the general public and not just certain members of the media. Remember, as long as the working class (and that includes especially the middle class), are fighting amongst themselves, they're not focused on the real problems or the culprits.

Secondly, there needs to be global worker cooperatives or clearing houses for the exchange of information about corporate abuses of employees as a whole, the environment, or corruption of government officials. This requires monitoring of the government and corporations by whatever means possible and the deliberate and immediate publication of this information. It means the sharing of organizing techniques, be it by Skype--either teleconferencing or individually, emails, blogs, YouTube, or snail mail. But remember again, if it's electronic or telephonic, it can be easily monitored.

Third, as Malcolm X once said, "by any means possible". That has to be your tactics, but avoid violence. Why? Violence begets violence and governments, in the interests of their corporate paymasters, will be itching for an excuse to impose martial law. Look for examples in Iceland, Ukraine, Poland, and Romania. Note too where the "Arab Spring" failed with their democratic movements (a bad example is often more useful than a good one). What the workers should be looking for is exposure and global condemnation. Think in terms like Berlin and Spokane aren't different cities in different countries. In this new world, they're two cities in the same global market. The workers there are just the same as workers in a neighboring town.

Lastly, the one thing that is feared more than the public spotlight is the environment that deters this, and that's democracy. However---and this is key---never assume that democracy is the same for everyone. What Americans had was based on a specific series of cultural and economic events. Every people is unique and must develop their own style of democracy. For some, it may be socialistic while for others it could be more theocratic or even anarchic. Whatever works best for them is what's acceptable.

While many, if not most of us, still cling to the notion of "my country right or wrong", countries themselves exist only as reference points and fond memories. This is the New World Order. We need to accept that the rules have changed and learn to play them lest we travel even further down the path of debt slavery and indentured serfdom.

The Fall of Obama? / The Christian Exodus

A lot of folks on the Right are chattering about the pending "fall" of the Obama Administration over the Benghazi cover-up affair. Former Presidential candidate, radio and TV host, Mike Huckabee has stated that the Benghazi cover up will do to Obama what Watergate did to Nixon and the Monica Affair almost did to then President Bill Clinton. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney has been stumbling all over himself; backtracking and spinning like a top to misdirect, redirect and distance the White House from the whole disaster. Carney has done more tapdancing than Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, and Donald O'Connor combined. But, the cold hard reality is that nothing will become of this American tragedy.

On Wednesday, May 8th, three State Department officers were finally allow to testify before Congress as to exactly what went down on September 11 2012 in Benghazi Libya which resulted in the murders of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others. The testimony came amid delays, accusations of harassment, threats, and attempted bribes. The result was a far cry from the official White House line and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's testimony before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on January 23rd. The individuals on the ground in Libya had communicated their mounting concerns over increased Al Qaeda activity; the need for improved security and an evacuation plan. Later, with what would be an 8 hour assault on the compound, requests for assistance were repeated denied. US and allied assets in the region, which clearly could have affected the outcome, were repeatedly told to stand down (this also led to the removal of the two senior commanding officers, General Carter Ham and Rear Admiral Charles Gaouette, for refusing to abandon embassy personnel).

We also learned that the official "talking points", which were to be spoon fed to the public, were rewritten 12 times! And that comes after the public was told by the White House that only one word---"embassy"--was replaced. Deleted were references to the type and origin of the assault as well as prior warnings and recommendations (the public was told it was a "spontaneous" riot over an irrelevant movie not even known about in the region, let alone in Benghazi. What we were left with was a cover up to protect an incumbent president running for reelection, a complaisant media, and four dead Americans, including a US Ambassador.

However, will this lead to the fall of the Obama Presidency? The answer is no. Just like Obama declared certain Wall Street companies were "too big to fail" despite gross mismanagement, incompetence, and greed, so too is the Obama Administration too big to fail. The Republicans are often protrayed as the party of big business. But the fact is, the Democrats are just as eaten up by corporate money as the Right. Both political parties are bought and paid for. Americans are given merely the illusion of choice. Right now, the big money needs the Obama Administration in power. Why? Frankly I don't know, and I don't pretend to know the mind of those trying to control and manipulate governments and the world economy. I can guess that whatever it is, it's to their benefit. Perhaps it's a payback for the bailouts. Perhaps its Obama's support of illegal immigration which will help drive down wages and benefits and increase job scarcity.

Still, there's the question of why the Obama Administration wanted all references to Al Qaeda and terrorist activity removed. Perhaps it's because it contradicts White House claims that Al Qaeda is a spent force, or that worldwide terrorism is in decline (which would affect financial markets), or was it because of our "Johnny-come-lately" support for the anti-Kaddafi pro-democratic forces while Moslem extremists were on the spot and successful in hijacking the pro-Democracy moment, just as they did in Egypt and are doing in Syria and will likely do in Iraq, Lebanon, and Gaza. Then again, maybe Obama has another reason not to upset or "offend" Moslem extremist. Perhaps by downplaying their role, we were telescoping our acceptance of the attack as a justifiable (in their eyes) response to the killing of Osama bin Laden and that we would not retaliate. This could also be seen as acknowledging their defacto sphere of influence in the region. Signs of a tiring Empire?

We do know that members of the Obama Administration have met with key media executives (as an aside, David Rhodes, president of CBS, it the brother of Obama's National Security Director, Ben Rhodes, who was instrumental in the talking point rewrites Do you think they talked about Benghazi? Yeah, me too). Again, surmising how the Benghazi cover up would be handled, most of the media outlets continue to treat the subject almost as a nonstory; a political ploy; and bury as deeply as they can. Given the media's power to influence public discussion, the support of the financial powerbrokers, the weakness of the GOP, there's little danger the Obama Administration will fall any time soon. What, in fact, may come out of this is a more refined means to manage the media and control how stories are presented to the public. Maybe former Secretary of State Clinton's word to Congress, "What difference does it make how they died" will ring true yet.

The Christian Exodus

I came across an interesting story, which surprised me, not because of the content, but because of its implications and the fact the story has received virtually no mainstream coverage. The story relates how Christians in predominately Moslem nations are not just being actively harassed, but brutalized and even murdered with, at the very least, the knowledge of their governments.
Why is that? We all know the history of animosity between certain Moslem groups and Jews, especially those Jews who support the existence of Israel (the so-called "Zionists"). A few may know about the equally vindictive hatred between these same extremist Moslem groups and Hindus and Buddhists, not to mention the native religions in various other places, such as Africa and Southeast Asia, where Islam is spreading.

But this is something new. For centuries Christians (mainly Eastern Orthodox), have lived a relatively peaceful existence in places like Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Ethiopia, and Libya (which, by the way, continue to receive billions in US and Western aid). Now, Christians of all stripe have become the targets of an emerging hatred which has resulted in beatings, rapes, arson, gang violence, bombing of churches, and more recently, mass murder, including beheadings of ministers. Any action---a single word or perceived expression---can incite riots. To be seen reading a bible in public is to invite beatings. To hold a private bible study in one's own home can result in the home being burned down, sometimes with the occupants still inside. It recently came to light that Moslems extremists were kidnapping young pre or early teenage Christian girls and forcefully converting them to Islam, then shipping them off to other parts of the country or overseas into forced servitude, prostitution, marriages, which are often to men many times older and abusive. It was recently revealed that a terrorist ring plotting the assassination the head of the Orthodox Church, Patriarch Bartholomew, was broken up in Turkey, a secular but increasing theocratic nation.

Many have been forced from their homes. In Egypt alone, over 100,000 Coptic Christians, have been forced to leave. In Mali, 200,000 have fled. In European nation of Bosnia, over 200,000 have fled. But nothing is being done. There is little to no international outcry, although not for lack of effort. No action from the United Nations (where countries like Iran have a seat on Human Rights Council) is expected. Their voices are ignored in the name of "multiculturalism", and appeasement.

In Europe, where churches are closing because of a decades of decline in attendance, in part from a "pew tax", the request for permits to build new mosques, or convert former churches, are on the rise. While there has been some clashes, where the Christian community and various EU governments have been overwhelmingly accepting, none have come anywhere close to level violence Christians are experiencing. One would expect similar treatment from a faith which calls itself a "religion of peace".

Twas the Day after Christmas

Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the land,
America awoke without a economic plan.
To the streets! To the Malls!
To find someone to blame and kick in 'em in the...

On Ford! On Chevy! On Beamer and Dodge!
To the bank, my complaint I must lodge!
Where's my savings, my retirement, and job?
I've worked hard. I've been robbed!

On to bank I did drove,
Down broken roads and overgrown groves.
Foreclosed homes up and down the block,
On Wallstreet , I wished a pox!

I demand to the see the manager
On him alone will I vent my anger!
I searched and searched all around,
Not a IRA in sight; not a dime to be found!

"I'm not to blame" he did exclaimed
Smiling wryly ; adapt at the game.
"Why, it was someone else. It wasn't us "
"Get it straight. No more of your guff"

"Why you must be mistaken" he said with a sigh,
His mouth was moving, I thought it must be a lie!
"Responsibility here, you cannot hold.
It's Washington's fault we were told.
But if you may, if mus'
You'll have to go elsewhere to fuss".

So, I called my Senator; Called my Congressman,
"Where's my golden years? I had a plan!"
With serious expression and upper lips held stiff,
"We're sorry to tell you, but it's fallen off the cliff".

"Cliff?" I shouted. "Do you think me a fool?"
"I've had it with you. Enough your bull".
"It's all true our naive friend"
"It's the other guy's fault that we've reached the end".

"Who's to blame? I voted for you don't your see?"
"You were to take care of us. You were to take care of me!"
With a smile as charming as a snake, they motioned me closer,
My confidence they now wanted to take

"We promised you promises, and yes we lied,
We promised to take care of you until you died.
You never questioned what we did, and willingly believed every word that we said".
"Do not blame us for what we do. It is to our natures that we must be true.
Wolves in sheep's clothing. Are you surprised?
It was you after all, who pulled the wool over your own eyes".
And with that, down gilded Wallstreet they did stro',
Arm and arm, more friend than foe.

So after all, it's to us to blame
We let them write the rules and we play at their game.
Unless we say no more and get it right
There's will be no Merry Christmas. No more good night.

Three Visions of America

As our nation heads for a "Thelma and Louise" moment with Obama and Boehner playing the title characters, I have to ask myself if the actions of these two individuals reflect the will of the American People. After all, isn't that what they were elected to do---represent you and me? Of course, both "gentlemen" will tell you they are, but from outside the Beltway, in the world of mortgages and coupons, it sure seems like they're playing political chicken with our financial future. It's like a high stakes game of Russian Roulette, except they're using our money to finance the game and the gun is aimed at our heads, not theirs.

Although Obama won re-election for a myriad of reasons, the fact is that he did not receive a mandate from the American People, and neither did the Republicans, who remain in control the House. US Taxpayers don't trust either party and thought the safest thing to do was pit both sides against each other in the hope they'll offset each other and leave us alone. It worked in the past. Well, that's not how it's playing out. It seems both sides are using us as their piñata as they take swings at each other. This can't go folks. We can't continue to elect the "lesser of two evils" in the hopes they'll be at each other's throats and we can squeak by. That's no way to run a railroad (though it's a good way to get railroaded as we now know).

S
o, what do we? Well, there are three visions of America in play right now, but there can be only one answer. The other two will be swept in the "dustbin of history" as Leon Trotsky once famously remarked. The first vision, Obama's, is to remake America. Obama has allegedly said on several occasions that the US Constitution is outdated and needs to scraped in favor of something more "contemporary". There's no question that the America of 1776 isn't the America of 2012. He has taken America further to the Left than ever before in our history. A lot of people are calling him a "socialist". While that's meant to be a slight, it's hardly accurate. Socialism is control of government and common ownership by and for the people. That's certainly not what he appears to have in mind.

Nevertheless, Obama is wanting the "rich" and middle class to pay more taxes; clearly a transfer of wealth. He is also imposing the federal government onto health care; not through regulation, but through punitive taxation. He has done little to end our addiction to Middle Eastern oil, but he has shown an increased willingness to follow the dictates of international organizations, including the UN which raises the question as to where he places US sovereignty. He has open our borders (and the taxpayer's pocketbook) to illegal immigration; not for humanitarian reasons, but to cement his political strength through numbers. He has shown an increased willingness to use the power of the Executive Order to bypass Congress to short circuit the balance of power as established by the Constitution. So, I think it can be safely assumed that Obama wants to enhance the power of the federal government to create a "cradle to grave" State, or as the late Dr. Bertram Gross coined, "Friendly Fascism".

The other vision, which belongs to the Republicans, isn't vastly different. They seem to protect the interests of big business from additional taxation and regulation (though regulation on small businesses seem to go unchecked). They would like to shift the addition burden of government service down to the middle class while the "balancing the budget" through cuts in social programs. They are looking for a presidency which has to go through them to get anything done, which, again, would appear to be an attempt to short circuit the Constitution. They too have ignored any efforts to close the borders to illegal immigration. Not for humanitarian reasons, but because this would add more workers, which would reduce wages and benefits and increase profit margins for corporations. On the issue of national healthcare, they see this as an unnecessary intrusion of the federal by mandating employer carried insurance on businesses with 50 or more full time employees. As a result, these "compassionate" employers will simply reduce the number of full time employees and/or cut wages and increase prices. This will force more people into a government mandated pool. On the global front, their interest is helping businesses open more markets. They've worked to kill alternative energy initiatives while protecting established oil, gas, and coal special interests (of which many are prime beneficiaries). Capitalism is an insatiable beast. The end result is a big government seeking to expand its power and intrusion into everyday lives. In short, a fascism uniquely all our own.

The third and final vision of America is vastly different form the first two. It recognizes the need for a basic safety net. But one in which everyone contributes and whose use is temporary. Everybody needs a helping hand now and again, but public charity shouldn't be career option and there should be no "reward" for unproductive behavior. Taxes are, at best, a necessary evil. However, everyone should be required to pay their fair share ("fair" being the operative word. I personally favor consumption tax in lieu of what we now use). Success should be encouraged, not penalized. Corporations are not "individuals" and should not have the same rights as individuals, especially when it comes to influencing government. Since the nature of corporations is to generate profit above all else, the interest of the public will always takes a back seat. Therefore, corporations should be regulated and required to pay a minimum tax.

This vision seeks a smaller and much less intrusive federal government, with more authority going to the states and local communities. It supports old fashion innovation, and that includes new forms of energy. No country should not be held economic hostage by any other nation or group. We exist as nation of laws, and that includes enforcement of laws pertaining to our borders. Those who came here illegally and want to stay, need to apply just like everyone else. Those here illegally are not entitled to the benefits of being a citizen in any sense. English is the language of this country. Learn to speak it. It's what is expected of immigrants in other countries. Government should have little role in what goes on in our personal lives, and yes, that includes our bedrooms whether or not we happen to personally approve someone else's preferences.

What this third vision of America seeks is a smaller and less intrusive federal government with greater individual freedom while maintaining a watchful eye on big business. It seeks a more balanced and fairer tax system that provides for a basic national safety net while not destroying one's sense of personal worth or ability to be a productive member of society. It seeks to maintain our national sovereignty and encourage legal immigration, and that means becoming part of our national melting pot not creating nationalistic enclaves. Lastly, this vision believes in the Constitution as it was written.

The question is which vision will finally prevail? That's the real question which is being played out in Washington and governments all over the country. There's little difference between the first two, which leads to economic serfdom, and the third one may already be too late. Under the first two, we lose. Under the last one, we have a chance to grow and prosper as a nation again. Certainly time is quickly running out if it's to become a reality. So, what will you do? Sit back and watch TV or play some video game? Continue to participate in the slight-of-hand con being played out by the two major parties using your money with your future and that of your children and their children on the line? Or will you say "enough", and work to restore America to what it was meant to be? It's time to look up and see what's really going on.

America under Siege

America is under siege. The American Public senses it. They know "something" is wrong; something is out of kilter. We've known it for some time. This isn't anything new. Washington politicians have long ignored the American People, but they've become increasing brazen in their arrogance. The only time they seem to pay attention to us is during the election cycle, and then, not to the issues important to us, but to "manufactured" issues designed to divide and distract voters. You better believe that if there was some way to get around the voters, they would do it. So, let's take a look at ongoing assault on the American Voters.

1. Gerrymandered districts. These are political districts designed (rigged) to maximize a desired political turnout for a particular party and/or politician. Akin to stacking a deck of cards or fixing a horse race.

2. Citizens United ruling. The US Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that corporations were protected under the 1st Amendment, and donations to parties and/or politicians constituted "free speech". The catch is that flesh and blood human beings are capped by how much they can give while soulless artificial entities can give as much as they like. Can you say "Frankenstein"?

3. Illegal Immigration. There are some 12 million individuals here illegally. They chose to break our national laws to come here strictly for economic reasons. Very few came as political refugees. Their goal is to make money, send some of it back home and avoid integrating themselves into American Society. This means they don't intend (unless forced or compelled) to learn English. As illegals, they can bypass many of our other laws (such as those covered by OSHEA, transportation and building codes). They use taxpayers funded services to the tune of billions annually while not contributing back to the system. Think opening a can of termites in your house.

4. Drug Wars. Since the late 1960's, American has been fighting a war against illegal drugs. The US Government has spent billions of our tax dollars, and is still losing the war. We've propped up foreign governments (often unpopular and violent military juntas). With illegal immigration, has come drug related crime. We've imprisoned millions of individuals; again at taxpayer expense. It seems that vicious drug gangs and narco-states are only victors here (not to mention certain pharmaceutical companies). It's past time to re-examine our so-called "war" and pick our fights.

5. Energy Dependence. Let's face it, gas and oil prices are already too damn high. Anyone remember the Green Movement or the OPEC Oil Embargo of the 1970's? Here we are, 30+ years later and we are no more energy independent than we have flying cars. Oil companies complain they aren't "really" making a profit, yet every quarter they post mindboggling record profits. Politicians have been promising since Jimmy Carter in 1976 that within "X" years, we'll cut back our dependence on foreign oil and/or will have alternative energy sources. Government mandates improved automobile fuel efficiency, and Detroit keeps getting extensions. Funding for alternative energy (solar, wind, etc.) is sporadic at best. We need to get serious about our energy usage and demand that it happen. Until we do, we're vulnerable to threats and blackmail.

6. The Debt. This is a nation killer. We've allowed (yes, "allowed") Washington to kick the debt can down the road. It's easy to commit a crime when everyone is an accomplice. We've allowed Washington to "borrow" and swindle (through some creative and questionable accounting) not just our immediate future, but the futures of our children and grandchildren. Without thinking, we've sold our children and grandchildren into economic slavery. We've sold our financial sovereignty to our ideological enemies. We've mortgaged the ranch to the rustlers. We've bailed out the crooks not just with our money, but against our expressed instructions to Washington, and when Mainstreet America asked for help, we were ignored. The Democrats and Republicans argue over abstracts while we lose our jobs and our homes. Both parties are to blame, and we are just as guilty for voting them back in.

7. Tax Code. There is no reason our tax code should be more than three or four pages long. I guess that's what we get for allowing lawyers to write tax laws protecting their corporate clients rather than impartial college accounting professors. We need to drop our current system which rewards those at the top and those at the bottom at the expense of those in the middle and replace it with a consumption tax. You pay a tax only on what you buy. You control your taxes by what you buy. The more you have (and spend), the more tax you pay. Couldn't be more fair and level. We need to re-establish the poverty level and impose a graduated tax structure to wean people on the public dole off. We need to increase incentives to improve work skills and education, as well as R&D. We need to encourage people to save by eliminating taxes on savings under $100,000.00. We need to make it easier for small businesses to operate by minimizing red tape. Large corporations should pay a minimum tax, and they should lose exemptions when they ship jobs overseas. Washington needs to remember that this nation was started from a tax revolt. We did it once. We will do it again.

8. Foreign Aid. Why do we give money to people who hate us? Why do we dump billions in aid into countries where we know nothing or very little ever makes it to the people in need or who trade our aid for weapons to wage wars? Any aid should be delivered direct to the people or not at all. Why do we support right wing coups and military juntas over governments duly elected by their people, even if those governments happen to be left wing? Do you know how many nations have modeled their government on ours? The answer is zero. None. We should help (if asked) make sure elections are fair and honest (although we seem to have some difficulty in that department here at home). If the people elected a right winger or left winger fairly, that's their business. We have no business trying to impose our form of capitalist democracy on anyone.

9. Global Warming. Look, "something" is happening. I don't know if it's man induced; part of some natural cycle; or some combination. It really doesn't matter. Weather is becoming more extreme. We need to look at what we can do to minimize its effect. We need better emergency response plans (and people need to pay better attention when told to act). In case you've missed it, fresh water is disappearing and our food sources are beyond capacity. As sea levels rise and weather becomes more damaging (like droughts, floods, dust bowls, etc), the burden on our existing sources become even more stressed. Can you imagine millions of starving people on the move globally?

10. Government. Perhaps this is the biggest and most dangerous assault facing the American People. Government has become too big; too paternalistic; too arrogant; and too beholding to the corporate global elite. You and I have stopped being citizens of America. We are now global consumers. We are given the illusion of choice each time we go to the polls. We can have the red puppet or the blue puppet just so long as we ignore the strings. We are valued by our consumption level as measured by our credit rating. We are analyzed, surveyed, and tracked. Our every need is anticipated in order to entice into incurring more debt. Obsolescence is assumed. Quality is passé. Under Obamacare, even we become obsolete as our healthcare is "managed" and rationed. We've become willing economic serfs. We the People are now We the Sheeple.

These are by no means all inclusive. There are many other issues, such as terrorism (foreign and domestic), our involvements in various overt and covert foreign wars, or the United Nations, but these are some of the most important. Time for us to act is rapidly running out. What are you prepared to do? And then what are you prepared to do?

A Dirty Little Secret

I'm going to let you all in a secret. It's a secret that many of us long suspected; maybe even whispered among our family or closest friends, but rarely out loud for fear of being label part of the lunatic fringe. Intuitively, we know America long ago ceased being a democratic Republic. Our Founding Fathers set out to create a nation based on the Roman Republican model, which, seen from the eyes of the Enlightenment, was the ideal form of government; a government whereby the citizens would elect representatives from among their fellow community leaders to go to Washington and represent their interests, and that of the nation. There was no intention that these representatives would belong to a political party (which the majority of Founding Fathers abhorred as divisive) nor for the creation of a professional ruling political class (which was hateful to them). In fact some, like Jefferson, thought the representatives shouldn't even be paid and considered it simply as part of every citizen's civic duty. This was to be essentially a middle class nation ruled by citizen legislators with power localized.

Fast forward to the early 21st Century and take a look around. What you see isn't something new. It's been here for decades, if not for most of the last two centuries. It's been out in the open, and it's been hiden away. We had crusader politicians come along to expose the secret, and we've had politicians come along to shuttle the secret back into the shadows. More often than not, most of the politicians were a little of both. So, what's the secret?

I couldn't quite put my finger on it until the Obama, a Democrat, brazenly bailed out failing banks when the American People overwhelming said "no". We've all been taught that we are responsible for our decisions, good or bad. It was how the country functioned economically. But, it was as if our voices didn't even matter. Following additional bailouts of automakers and Wallstreet, it apparently didn't. Congress and presidents Bush II and Obama have repeatedly ignore demands by the public to end illegal immigration and require make English our official language. Again, our voices fell on deaf ears. Once more, Americans asked "what the hell? Who is the employer and who is the employee here"? It didn't make sense that politicians would put their careers on the line by so arrogantly ignoring the voters unless there was something else in play.

Then it hit me. The US Supreme Court, in its "Citizens United" ruling, slammed not just the American voters, but our entire political process by declaring that these artificial entities, designed simply to create money for their owners --- corporations --- had not just the same "rights" as you and I, but those rights were even greater because of their wealth. Whereas you and I are limited by federal campaign election laws as to the amount of money we can contribute to a candidate, "Citizens United" said the corporations were free to donate what their boards of directors wanted. Thus, our First Amendment right, the freedom of speech was equaled to money, and because corporations had more of it, they obviously have a greater measure of that right than flesh and blood people.

With the federal government's bailing out of these same corporate entities, again using our money without our collective permission, the secret became openly apparent. America was now a Corporate Republic. We are no longer citizens of a country, but merely consumers in a global economy. Congressional districts have been minutely gerrymandered as to make it nearly impossible to defeat an incumbent and thus ensure the continuity of the corporate sponsorship. Elections have become so expensive, that unless you're either part of the moneyed elite or sufficiently connected, an average citizen stands little chance of getting elected. But to prevent those rare exceptions or "misguided" crusaders who do, their energy and reformist zeal are siphoned off into various committees and subcommittees. Refusal to participate is unheard of thanks to party whips and enforced conformity. Power to get one's legislation is carefully controlled by committee chairman. As former Speaker of the House, Sam Rayburn famously once said, "to get along, you have to go along". Resistance to the political machine is indeed futile.

It was now no longer stage managed. The facade was dropped and the illusion of a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" was dropped once and for all. The role of the federal government was to provide legitimacy, taxpayer money, and the power (read: threat) of the federal government to enforce the needs of the corporations. Their silent errant boys and girls, aka lobbyists, would continue their behind the scenes roles of relaying instructions. Washington would redirect money you and I pay in taxes to serve the needs of corporations rather than our communities. To be sure, PR firms would have to step up their sleight of hand propaganda by redirecting the American People to focus on the supposed "goodness" these parasites were doing, if only we wouldn't look behind the curtain for if we do, the "benefits" they bring could suddenly vanish and reappear in a more appreciative and compliant community or cheap labor country thousands of miles away.

Those who dare peek behind the curtain and speak out are quickly consigned to the realm of "fringe" and every effort is made to condemn and belittle them as "crack pots", "extremists", and simply dismiss them. The most dangerous ones are intentionally ignored. A few a made examples of, such as the recent former US Marine who was arrested for his anti-government posts on Facebook. For the vast majority of the public, however, they are mesmerized with mindless pabulum of so called "reality TV", video games or some other mind numbing stimuli which stifles the will or need to think. Most are too tired and stressed to think anyway. Make it instant. Make it effortless. "News" for those still inquisitive, is filtered, shifted, and feed in baby spoonful sizes. Gerber's for Intellect. Just enough to feel "informed" but not enough to question the official line. Most are just trying to find or keep a job anyway. No one feels secure enough to rock the boat. Even unions tow the corporate line while the rank and file have forced to "donate" to candidates they don't even know through mandiatory deductions. Keep the masses docile and preoccupied, or as they said in Imperial Rome, "feed on bread and circuses".

Perhaps, to paraphrase an expression of my generation, it's time to tune back in and turn off the background noise. Perhaps we need to ask ourselves and each other just what it is we need (not want) government to do. Remember, government doesn't earn money. It produces nothing. It exist only by taking money (supposedly with our consent) and redirects to the cause or function we collectively agree to. Perhaps, given the global world we now live in, we need do this globally. It's time for working men and women to truly unite and refuse to be artificially divided by politicians. The other option is to follow the illusion of choice further down a road to the Corporate State and certain economic serfdom.
